Top flicks of the Noughties - 2001

My top flicks of 2001

13 Ghosts
Made by Dark Castle, the company behind legendary horror maker William Castle, 13 ghosts is a remake of one of his films. People in glass houses should go into the basement where all the ghosts are. Great special effects. Apologies for Shannon Elizabeth.

A Knight's Tale
Faffy feel good flick with Heath Ledger and Paul Bettany. Cool bit of choreography to a Bowie song.

Bubble Boy
FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR! Jake Gyllenhaal. Loved it.

Donnie Darko
Richard Kelly sent us all on a mind trip with an ugly bunny called Frank. Kinda makes Lost a bit easier to understand...

Harry Potter and the (insert quirky sounding, mysterious thing here)
I'll just put them all here under the one thing to save space. All good.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Sad that things kinda went downhill for Kevin Smith after this, although some might say before this... Good laughs. Yay for Jason Lee.

Josie and the Pussycats
One of the most criminally under seen movies ever! Another favourite at the video shop. Fantastic soundtrack, how else could you hear a song called Backdoor Lover? Parker Posey and Alan Cumming are super fine. Du Jour means freedom! Du Jour means crash positions!

K-Pax
Kevin Spacey being Kevin Spacey as only Kevin Spacey can.

Lord of the Rings
Same as Harry Potter, all very good, all very big.

Moulin Rouge
I am a fan of the occasional musical. Thought Baz did a good job with this one. Great soundtrack and a very nice Ewan McGregor to boot.

Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen and Sixteen
Cool flick, great cast, Steven Soderbergh.

Spirited Away
The first full length Japanese animated flick I ever saw. Absolutely beautiful movie. A must see.

Spy Kids
Lots of fun with Robert Rodriguez at the helm of this kids action flick. Alan Cumming is fantastic again!

The Dish
They don't make Aussie films like this anymore. Big laughs, fantastic cast. I wish we made more like this.

The Emperor's New Clothes
Not to be confused with the Emperor's New Groove... Ian Holm stars as Napoleon Bonaparte and Sergeant Eugene Lenormand who just happens to look exactly like Napoleon Bonaparte. Kinda like the movie Dave but set in France

The Royal Tennenbaums
My first Wes Anderson movie and certainly not my last. Puts the fun back into dysfunctional. Even Gwyneth Paltrow was good.

Windtalkers
Great movie about a rarely known subject. In WW2 a whole bunch of Navajo Indians were used as messengers because their language was impossible to crack for anyone who didn't speak it. Some poetic licence has been taken but very educational nonetheless.
