Season of the Witch

Nicolas Cage, to me, is a ten to one kind of guy. For every ten films he makes, there's one good one. Season of the Witch is not one of those good films.
The film is directed by Dominic Sena who directed Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds and is also the man responsible for Swordfish. Hmm. Bragi F. Schut (Threshold) wrote the screenplay.
Season of the Witch, or SOTW (to give it all the space it deserves) is the weirdest buddy/road trip movie I've ever seen.
Set during the crusades in the mid fourteenth century, Behmen (Nic Cage - Kick-Ass) and Felson (Ron Perlman - Hellboy) are on the side of God and don't mind using their swords to 'convert' non-believers. After years of slaying people, suddenly one day they grow a conscious when they are ordered to 'convert' a whole bunch of women and children. Hey, at least they have standards.
The two chums rebel against 'The Church' but stay loyal to God.
A nasty plague has killed off hundreds of people and, naturally, the church thinks a witch is responsible. You gotta love the power of deductive reasoning in the Middle Ages.
The unnamed alleged witch (Claire Foy - Little Dorrit) is to be taken to a monastery for trial. The monastery is a little way away so Behmen and Felson are joined by some other dudes so they don't get lost/killed.
As with most road trip flicks, things happen along the way - mostly people dying.
Oh, the witch stares at everyone a lot. I mean A LOT.
Yawn. I have no idea why I watched this film. No idea. Unconscious punishment for prior deeds perhaps?
Noting mentioning his wig (this time) Cage is Cage, again. I don't know why Ron Perlman is in this film. He seems like such a cool dude. Maybe someone loved The Name Of The Rose and their dying wish was to see Ron Perlman in period costume again. I can't think of any other explanation. The 'twist' at the end makes you wonder why they called the film what they did.
This could have been a better film if everything was done differently.
Things I learnt: I've been sitting here for five minutes and so far nothing has come to mind.
Pass.
Two out of ten.
