I didn't think it would be possible for a movie to be as good as or even compete with the awesomeness that was Kick Ass. Till now. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is the most awesomenest movie of the year... nay... the DECADE and you must watch now.
It seems like years since Brit director Edgar Wright gave us his direct-to-cult films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Us fans have been waiting anxiously for his latest flick; lapping up any titbit movie magazines and bloggers could find. Finally, the wait is over.
I haven't read the graphic novels by Brian Lee O'Mally and that fact will be adjusted as soon as possible. If the usual 'book is better than movie' thing applies to this one then those books are bound to blow my mind!
Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera - Superbad) lives with his gay friend Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin - Igby Goes Down) in a one bed flat and plays bass in his band Sex Bob-Ombs (a tribute to those bomby things in Super Mario) along with pal/lead singer Stephen Still (Mark Webber - Shrink) and ex-girlfriend/drummer Kim Pine (Alison Pill - Milk). They're about to play at the Toronto Battle of the Bands.
Scott is currently dating seventeen year old high school girl Knives Chau (Ellen Wong - Unnatural history) but plans to dump her after meeting the girl of his dreams (literally) Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead - Die Hard 4.0). But like most girls, she's got baggage. In order to date Ramona Scott has to defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends...
1. Bollywood fan Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha - Fair Game)
2. A-List actor Lucas Lee (Chris Evans - Captain America)
3. Super-powered vegan Todd Ingram (Brandon Routh - Superman)
4. Bi-furious Roxie Richter (Mae Whitman - Arrested Development)
5. Keyboard playing twins Kyle Katawanagi (Keita Saito - Super Club)
6. and Ken Katawanagi (Shota Saito - Touch)
7. and big bad Gideon Gordon Graves (Jason Schwartzman - Funny People)
Things also get a bit awkward when Scott's ex-girlfriend and super-cool lead singer of the band The Clash at Demonhead 'Envy' Adams (Brie Larson - Greenberg) comes to town.
I can't get over how frikken cool this film is. Wright has excelled himself with his usual quirk and super tight editing style and mixed it with on screen graphics from old 8-bit video games complete with 'Pee bar' and real coins that fall out of the sky every time an Ex is defeated. The ‘Universal Pictures’ opening graphics and theme song is a great touch.
This is the best I've seen from Michael Cera. I would never imagine him as an action star by Oh My Lord does he whoop some serious ass. I'm surprised he didn't get a part in the buff-a-thon The Expendables! Note he had to fight not one but TWO superheroes, Captain America (Chris Evans) AND Superman (Brandon Routh)!
Evans and his league of stunt doubles are hilarious and if you listen closely, Evans does the voices for all of them!
The soundtrack is superb with songs by Beck and Nigel Godrich; pity there was a problem with one of the speakers at the cinema, it would have been cool to hear everything at full power. I guess that is just an excuse to go see it all over again (at a different cinema!)
Things I learnt: there's gonna be a rush on blue hair dye and nail polish soon; I wanna learn kung-fu; breaking up isn't always the hardest part.
Eleven out of ten.
Epic!
