The Bank Job
Kinda true story about a bunch of robbers in the UK who dug under a shop to get to a bank's vault and found some supposedly interesting photographs. Someone was quick to snuff this story out of the media at the time. Word is that the photos were of a member of the Royal family in some sort of compromising position... Jason Statham is very entertaining.
Burn After Reading
Another Cohen brother's triumph. It's a movie that teaches us, well, absolutely nothing but does it very well indeed. John Malkovic, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand make you laugh out loud and scratch your head at the same time.
Charlie Bartlett
Cute little film with Robert Downey Jnr and Anton Yelchin (who goes on to play Chekov in the new Star Trek flick). Charlie Bartlett starts his own psychiatric clinic at school, even dishing out medication to the masses.
City of Ember
Really well done kids film about a city deep below the earth that starts to plunge into darkness all because of a lost box... also stars Bill Murray
Cloverfield
I missed half of this film from having to stare intently at the back of the seat in front of me so I wouldn't throw up in the cinema! OMG I've never felt so bad. I didn't manage to watch it on DVD in the safety of my own home (and in close proximity to my bathroom) and quite enjoyed it. JJ Abrams was declared King of the Viral Marketing Campaign.
The Dark Night
There goes that gruff speaking Batman again. Low voice, top flick. Heath Ledger stole the show as The Joker. Such a wickedly, deviant villain - brilliant. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two Face also deserves a very honourable mention.
The Day The Earth Stood Still
I still haven't seen the original - another for my list of NY resolutions... Keanu plays an alien and it kinda worked. I think this was the first movie that I didn't hear him as Ted Logan. Cool effects. Gort rocked.
Diary of the Dead
George Romero goes all handy-cam in his latest zombie fest. Might turn you into a vegetarian for a while. Graaaiiiins!
Drillbit Taylor
Owen Wilson pretends to look after a bunch of geeky kids at school. Lots of laughs. Good times had by all.
The Duchess
Keira Knightley pops on another period frock and does a lovely job. Ralph Fiennes pops on a hat and is a prick. Beautiful, lavish costumes and sets.
Eagle Eye
Don't trust anyone, don't turn on your computer, hell, don't even go outside anymore. If you do, you're in big trouble, Mister. Unless you're a twin... oops!
The Fall
The jury of my brain is still out on whether to make this movie a permanent feature in my Top Five Best Flicks list, but I don't think it will be out for much longer. Directed by Tarsem Singh, The Fall tells the story of stuntman Roy (played by the ravishing Lee Pace). He has an accident and is taken to hospital where he meets a little girl Alexandria. Roy, unable to get out of bed, feeds Alexandria stories so she will get him morphine. The stories he tells however are the most beautiful stories I've seen in a film for a long time. Every single scene is a painting. Shot in different countries all over the world this film is a masterpiece. If you haven't seen this, you haven't seen anything. Such a treat!
Forbidden Kingdom
A story that might be familiar to those who grew up in the 80's. A kid from today's time is transported into the world of Monkey. You know, Born on a hill on a mountain top, spunkiest Monkey to ever pop. That one.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Written by Jason Segel (Marshall from How I Met Your Mother) tis the sad tale of a break up. Veronica Mars dumps Marshall and goes out with Russell Brand. We see a lot more of Jason Segel than we'd ever seen before...
Frost/Nixon
Ron Howard directs Michael Sheen as David Frost and Frank Langella as Richard Nixon in recreating the interview that broke a President. Magnificent to watch.
Ghost Town
Ricky Gervais sees dead people and Greg Kinnear. Funny flick.
Hancock
I'm still all WTF-ing about this one. Jason Bateman is so good and Wil Smith does make an alright anti-hero but WTF happened half way through? Charlize Theron puts on eyeliner and it all goes nuts!
The Happening
Again - another public service announcement. Don't do it!!
Hellboy 2 - The Golden Army
The non-brother from Bros plays a blonde-haired bad-ass. More Ron Perlman in that big red suit.
Henry Poole is Here
Melancholic film about Luke Wilson (the dark haired one) at the end of hope until he meets Radha Mitchell over the fence. People flock to his house when an image of a religious deity appears on the side of his wall.
The House Bunny
Lots of fun with a gruff talking Anna Ferris.
How To Lose Friends And Alienate People
The book they turned into a movie and popped in Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges. Then they added Megan Fox. Hmmm. Like the Pegg, not the Fox.
Igor
Kids flick with mad scientists and all their assistants are called Igor who just happens to be voiced by John Cusack. Nice story.
In Bruges
Colin Farrel and Brendan Gleeson get stuck In Bruges (in Belgium). It's really a lovely city.
Incredible Hulk
Edward Norton as the Hulk? I still don't see it...
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Jury is still out on this one. Was nice to have Indie back on the big screen (Raiders is my number 1 flick of all time) but all the rest is 'questionable'.
Let The Right One In
I did a review on this not so long ago right about here.
Midnight Meat Train
Only bought this recently on DVD. From the bloody fantastical mind of Clive Barker it's the movie that will put you off public transport and make you get a cab. Vince Jones and Bradley Cooper are bloody good.
Pathology
Milo Ventimiglia from Heroes goes to medical school and meets a new group of friends with an interesting hobby. Clever story about a group of med students who take turns in killing people in weird and wonderful ways then the rest of the group have to work out how it was done. Not for the squeamish.
Penelope
Gorgeous film starring Christina Ricci as Penelope, the beautiful rich girl with a gyspy curse on her family. James McAvoy pops over to woo her. Very nice colour palette.
The Pineapple Express
What exactly is the relationship rules between a drug dealer and his clients? Seth Rogen and James Franco discuss.
Quarantine
Nice screamer flick with Jennifer Carpenter and a building full of crazy.
Revolutionary Road
Kate Winslett and Leo DiCaprio team up again and this time the ship doesn't sink. It's an uncomfortable look into marriage in the 1950's. Truly a great movie.
Righteous Kill
Did you hear about that movie that stars two of the world's biggest actors? Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, back together again in a movie that no one saw because it was so bad. What a frikken shame.
Rock N Rolla
Guy Ritchie gets a bunch of his closest friends together and films a movie. Chaos ensues as per usual in a Ritchie film. The good kind though.
Role Models
Super funny flick with Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott and McLovin'
Run, Fatboy Run.
Simon Pegg and Dylan Moran in the same movie! YAY!! Hilarious fun with Hank Azaria in the gym change rooms...
Slumdog Millionaire
Danny Boyle wins eight Oscars with this emotional roller coaster of a love story.
Spiderwick Chronicles
Great kids flick about a whole other world out there full of nasties and magic.
Step Brothers
Will Ferrel and John C Reilly do their thing again.
Sunshine Cleaning
A film about two sisters who get in the cleaning business.. cleaning up after homicides and deaths that is. You've got to do what you've got to do to make a buck. Emily Blunt and Amy Adams are fantastic.
Tropic Thunder
LOL much
Twilight
Kristen Stewart is a mouth breather. I don't think there was one scene where her jaw wasn't on the floor.
W
Josh Brolin plays a stupid ass President surrounded by stupid ass people. Brolin is so good though. There were times I forgot it was even him. Very interesting look into a very stupid period of history - mainly George W Bush's life.
Wanted
Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy change the laws of physics and look super cool doing it.
Yes Man
Jim Carrey and Murray from Flight of the Concords. Every movie needs a Kiwi.
Zack and Miri Make A Porno
Again, the things you do for cash. Load of laughs, and bubbles...
