Paranormal Activity

Holy Crapper!! What a bloody great flick this was!
I am really fussy about my horror movies. It takes a bit to get the hairs on the back of my neck to do the hokey pokey. I spent my pre-teen years watching The Omen, The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror movies, they were good back then. Most horror flicks just don't seem to get it right these days, opting for more 'gorn' (gore/porn) and buckets of fake blood rather than focusing on what really scares us. Thankfully, Paranormal Activity has got thrills and chills and all those scary moments in just the right places. A great man once wrote, 'There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, that are dreamt of in your philosophy.' That is what is scary. The unseen. The unknown.
It cost a mere US$10,000 to make. According to variety.com, in the U.S it has made over 68 MILLION DOLLARS! That's a pretty good return!
Shot Blair Witch-style, (and even starts like Blair Witch with the movie being 'found footage') Paranormal Activity is about 'engaged-to-be-engaged' couple Katie and Micah and their lovely two-storey house. However, something isn't quite right. There are bumps in the night, taps turn on and off by themselves, sometimes Katie even sees a dark shadow at the end of her bed. After meeting with a psychic, Katie learns that she has a dark, demonic presence which follows her around. She has lived in a couple of houses and freaky stuff happens in each house. She can't just leave, it will follow her wherever she goes.
Fed up with nights of interrupted sleep, boyfriend Micah buys a video camera to find out exactly what is going on in their house. Not one of those pissy handy cams, a full on video camera! He follows Katie around, and visa versa, filming their everyday goings on. From breakfast, to arguments, to brushing teeth, everything is recorded, then at night they set up the camera in their bedroom...
I won't spoil this one but be warned, do not watch this movie at night, do not watch this movie in bed, and if someone tells you not to buy an Ouija board DO NOT BUY A FRIKKEN OUIJA BOARD!
There is a sequel in the works (somehow...) and how good is this - this was writer/director Oren Peli's first screenplay and first time in the director's chair!
9 out of 10!!
I'm sleeping with the lights on for the rest of the week and I don't care what that does to my carbon footprint!
