Immortals
I have a tentative list of Top Ten flicks. It's not set in stone, nor set in blog as of yet because, like the Borg, it keeps adapting, hence the 'tentative' part. One of the films in the frequently evolving 6-10 spot is The Fall directed by Tarsem Singh and starring the swoon-worthy Lee Pace (Wonderfalls). It is an absolutely gorgeous film. If you haven't seen it - watch it. It was also Singh's second film - the first being The Cell with Detective Goren and Jenny from the block. J-Lo aside, that too is visually stunning.
Tarsem Singh's third film Immortals was written by first timer Charley Parlapanides and must-be-related-or-gosh-darn-it's-a-small-world Vlas Parlapanides (Everything for a Reason). If films were rated on screen-saver moments, this one, as with his other two films, would get top marks.
If you need a moment to brush up on your Greek mythology, I highly recommend the opening song from Disney's Hercules!
Those havoc-wreaking Titans are locked up in an impenetrable cage sealed under Mount Tartarus. King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler) wants to get them out because he's a bad guy and bad guys want more bad guys to help them do bad guy things.
Buff peasant and full time agnostic Theseus (Henry Cavill - The Tudors) witnesses his mother's murder at the hands of Hyperion and vows to avenge her death, even if she does believe in those crazy Gods. His rag-tag team of Greeks include a pony-wanting thief, Stavros (Stephen Dorff- Blade) and an oracle priestess, Phaedra (Frieda Pinto - Slumdog Millionaire). Phaedra has a vision of Theseus with the awesome bow of Epirus bow - a bow that has an endless supply of arrows that never miss their target.
High atop Mount Olympus is Zeus (Luke Evans - The Three Musketeers) and his wonder kids Athena (Isabel Lucas - the crap Transformers film), Poseidon (Kellan Lutz - Twilight) and others. Zeus has forbidden them from getting involved with the war below between the humans. But, like every Star Trek episode, the Prime Directive gets pushed aside and the golden Gods can't help but meddle in the war that could lead to their undoing.
I'm totes biased when it comes to Tarsem's films and I love me some Greek mythology so I had a ball with this film. At times Rourke was a bit hard to understand, was Hyperion's power mumbling? There is plenty of blood so be warned those with weak tummies.
Visually - WOW. The sets, makeup, costumes are freaking amazing. Every single costume was spectacular. I loved how he created the Titan's prison and the Minotaur's mask made out of barbed wire and horns was brilliant. This man knows how to fill the screen with beautiful things.
All in all, very screen-saver worthy! I saw it in 3D which didn't really seem necessary but there are some fight scenes that are so gorgeous to watch in 3D; like a ballet of blood and dismembered corpses floating gracefully across the screen. Morbid yes, but whatev's, it looked awesome. Singh's transitions from scene to scene are magical, just like they were in The Fall. I love how he morphs faces from one scene into objects in the next.
I didn't really take much notice of the acting, I kept getting distracted by all the wonders on screen including Cavill's pecs. Can't wait to see him in Superman! Luckily Singh's next film Mirror Mirror is due out in a few months so I don't have to wait so long to see what he does next.
Things I learnt: why do priests insist on wearing funny hats; if you kill someone's mum in front of them, you're just asking for trouble; this is not Sparta, it's down the road a bit.
So very pretty
Eight out of ten.
Saw it tonight in 3D .... Freaking AWESOME film!!!! :-)
