OK, so who else has been in a car accident, woken up from a coma four days later and thought they were Liam Neeson? Just me? Damn shame.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra is the guy who gave us a dead Paris Hilton in his 2005 remake of House Of Wax and for that, I owe him my thanks. Oliver Butcher (Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde) and Stephen Cornwell (Marshall Law) co-wrote the screenplay that was adapted from Didier Van Cauwelaert's novel 'Out of My Head'.
Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson - Taken) and his gorgeous wife Liz (January Jones - Mad Men) have just arrived in Berlin where Harris will be attending a bio-tech conference. They get to the hotel and Martin realises he has left his briefcase with his passport at the airport and jumps in a cab to go back and get it. On his way to the airport he and taxi driver Gina (Diane Kruger - Inglourious Basterds) have a freak accident. While Gina is fine, Martin is sent to hospital where he wakes up from a coma four days later. His memory is a tad sketchy.
He tracks down his wife at a party at their hotel but she claims she has no idea who he is. She then introduces him to her husband, Dr. Martin Harris (Aidan Quinn - Jonah Hex). As Keanu Reeves would say, 'Whoa'.
Martin meets up with Ernst Jurgen (Bruno Ganz - The Reader), ex-Stasi officer and finder of people. If anyone can work out what the devil is going on, it's him.
Martin reconnects with Gina for answers as he is followed by goons in dark cars and leather jackets. These goons have a habit of killing people and both Martin and Gina are on their list.
Will Martin remember who he is? Who is that dude shacking up with his wife? Is he really Dr. Martin Harris or is something else going on here? And since when are bio-chemists such good defensive drivers?
So many questions, all of which are answered, thankfully. Liam Neeson goes all arse-whoopie like he did in Taken, he seems like such an unlikely action man but he does throw a good punch.
The city of Berlin is an impressive backdrop to the chaos that is being caused on its streets. Watching all that snow on screen almost made me forget how bloody hot it is here today... until I walked outside.
*sigh*
Action sequences are well choreographed and the car chases are quite snappy. I wouldn't have minded seeing more Frank Langella, he is such a commanding presence but was only on screen for a wee bit.
The film was very similar to another film which I won't mention due to giving the whole damn thing away! When you'll see this one you'll understand, I know you will, so long as you've seen that other one...
All in all, it was enjoyable and kept me guessing.
Things I learnt: always leep your passport in a fanny pack/bum bag/whatever you call it in your country no matter how daggy it looks; listen to your doctor; trust no-one (except your doctor).
Pretty good.
Seven out of ten.
