Morning Glory

Well, this year is off to a cracking start - it took freaking eight days to get me to a cinema! Gosh darn, working sure does cramp my style.
First for the year is fluff-a-thon Morning Glory which answers the question, just how would Indiana Jones go hosting a morning show?
Director Roger Michell is no stranger to fluff, after directing Notting Hill and Changing Lanes (teehee); and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna brought us such films as Laws Of Attraction, 27 Dresses, and The Devil Wears Prada (which shares an awful lot in common with this film). Television powerhouse couple from Bad Robot, JJ Abrams and Bryan Burk produced.
Upstart and firecracker Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams - Sherlock Holmes) just loves her job as a producer on a morning television show in New Jersey. Too bad she just got fired.
A brief period of unemployment ends with a phone call from TV station IBS head Jerry Barnes (Mr Blockbuster himself Jeff Goldblum); Becky is offered a position as a producer on the ratings-shy morning show Daybreak hosted by veteran Colleen (Diane Keaton - Smother) and foot fetishist and fake tan enthusiast, Paul (Ty Burrell - Modern Family).
Quick as a flash Becky kicks Paul off the show and recruits reluctant news anchor hard-arse Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford - from the Best.Film.Ever.Made). Mike, still full of pride (and scotch) from his glory days, refuses to bow down to the show's tedious levels of celebrity gossip and puff pieces and instead takes aim at Becky and the rest of the crew with his sardonic wit and still-inflated ego.
Daybreak is on its last legs and if Becky doesn't turn the ratings around fast, her lifelong dream might have its signal cut off for good. Bad pun, I know.
Meanwhile, Becky has caught the eye of 'smoking' TV exec Adam (Patrick Wilson - The Watchmen)(swoon). After many a failed romance (usually related to all the effort she puts into her career) Becky tries her luck one more time...
Despite sharing some major plot points with McKenna's other pretty-new-girl-takes-on-grumpy-authoritative-type-person movie (and a non-TV related euphemism) I did enjoy this one. The audience (and me) all laughed out loud many times, especially when weatherman Ernie (Matt Malloy - The Bounty Hunter) is sent off on numerous hair-raising location assignments. Ford probably didn't have to go far to play a grumpy old dude, word is he's pretty much like that anyway (and more power to him). It feels like years since I've seen Diane Keaton on screen; her and Ford had great chemistry and some hilarious moments on-air.
Rachel McAdams is a force to be reckoned with and this is yet another top notch performance to add to her pile of top notch performances...
Yes, it is predictable, but hey, it's not Inception, it's not even The Da Vinci Code. What it is is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours reminiscing about how Indiana Jones got that scar on his chin when he looked just like River Phoenix.
Things I leant: phones are best kept in fridges; fake tan should be made illegal; Jeff Goldblum is not dead.
Glory-ous.
Eight out of ten.
