Hungry?
In his last book Dexter By Design, author Jeff Lindsay dropped a bomb on our dear Dexter Morgan. His wife, Rita Bennett, found out she was pregnant. Good news you say? Well yes, but not if you're a serial killer who really, really needs his alone time to attend to his nocturnal blood-letting activities.
Fast forward nine months and Rita has just given birth. This small bundle of life makes Dexter reevaluate his. Does demonic Dex-Daddy keep doing those devilish deeds, dishing out deadly decrees or will he fold away the leathery wings of his Dark Passenger, say goodbye to his murderous ways and focus on his new baby?
Dexter doesn't get much time to think this over. His sister Sergeant Debra Morgan is on a case and needs his specialised expertise. After the death of yet another one of her partners, Deb is teamed up with Deke, a Brad Pitt look-a-like with half a brain. Not happy with this, Deb ditches Deke while she and Dexter investigates the disappearance of two teenage girls - two teenage girls who have gotten involved with a very unique crowd.
The search leads them to a bizarre crime scene at the Everglades. It looks like someone has had a wild party complete with spiked punch and a BBQ to boot. A few forensic swabs later, Dexter discovers what the main course was. Well, 'who' the main course was...
Back on the home front, Rita's kids and little killers in the making Astor and Cody keep hassling Dexter to teach them more about their own mini-Dark Passengers but all that gets put on hold when someone arrives on Dexter's doorstep unexpectedly. Someone from his past has come for a visit...
Who could it be and what the devil are they up to?
I heart Jeff Lindsay. He has created such a complex character and I look forward to seeing what simple everyday (to us anyway) obstacles he puts in Dexter's way. He keeps blurring the line that defines good and evil so much that soon it will be unrecognisable. What is it about this reprehensible person that makes you cheer him on? That makes you say enough with the whole 'life reevaluation' thing, Dex - hurry up and kill someone! Or was that just me...
Seems Dexter has gone to comedy school, Lindsay has turned up the laughs a few notches making this a real delight to read. There's one line from Doakes that had me laughing out loud - something in Dutch... Just thinking about it makes me chuckle.
Debra got on my nerves a bit - Lindsay turned the bitch dial up to eleven with her. Yes she was cranky and yes she had her reasons but Jeebus there were times when I thought if she was my sister I'd frikken clock her one!
I don't want to spoil anything but I thought it was weird that Lindsay chose this group of people to have as bad guys seeing as that particular genre been done to death lately. Twas an odd wagon for him to be getting on and I do hope he'll be getting off now.
Another thing on my wish list... I do hope we get to spend a bit more time with Dexter's mysterious guest in the next book; they've been absent for so long I'd love to catch up and find out what they've been doing all this time.
I really enjoyed this latest offering of everyone's favourite serial killer and I can't wait to see what Lindsay dishes up next. Hurry up!
If you're a fan of the TV series and haven't read any of the books you'd better get cracking, you've got a whole lot of catching up to do - just make sure you read them in order.
Finger lickin' good.
