Valentine's Day... Hmmm.
A flick made out of a truck load of cliches and cheese.
Directed by Garry Marshall (Georgia Rule, Princess Diaries I & II) and screenplay by Katherine Fugate (Army Wives and a bit of Xena!) is so much like the UK's Love, Actually, it may as well be called Valentine's Day, Actually. Both have a whole bunch of characters played by really big names and their stories intertwine and some relationships work out, some don't and there's the obligatory (possibly mandatory) cute ten year old kid with a big crush to boot. Some people are together but they're not meant to be and they end up with their best friend, new relationships hit a wall over a minor misunderstanding that is cleared up in one line but I'm sure they'll laugh about it later, ad nauseum ad infinitum, add more cheese.
There's nothing to see here people, move along. I really wish the pace of the movie moved along, it felt like it was at least thirty minutes too long. With a last act that was reminiscent of Lord of the Rings and it's twenty-seven endings, this baby, powered by the Energiser Bunny just kept going and going and going.
There were a few laughs and a few touching moments, I'll give it that, but nowhere near enough to hold up a whole film. Yes, it has a big glittery cast and yes, Bradley Cooper is a huge spunk and yes, Patrick Dempsey has gone way out of his comfort zone in playing... a doctor *gasp* but I expected so much more out of this. Or did I?
It is the accepted rule that when a movie comes out with this much hype there's usually something wrong with it. I gotta start listening to Flavor Flav, Don't believe the hype!
Things I learnt: Taylor Swift couldn't act if her life depended on it (shame it doesn't), Jessica Beil is a pretty good singer, Jennifer Garner can still whoop ass (even if it is just beating up a pinata), and Ashton Kutcher looks weird with women his own age.
Four out of Ten.
