Freddy's coming for you... again

I saw the trailer for the new/old Nightmare On Elm Street at the cinema today and it made me wonder...
Are there no more original ideas for horror movies anymore?
Are remakes the thing to do these days?
Do they make them any better the second time around?
I think the reason why the reboots don't always live up to the originals is the fact that they've lost that element of surprise. Things that scared the bejeebus out of us twenty years ago don't scare us so much the second time around. So the director has the awkward task of messing with something that didn't need to be messed with in the first place.
Should Hollywood let sleeping horror movies lie?
Should the studios start promoting and screening the originals again instead of making new versions for the new generation of theatre-goers who probably don't even know they're watching a remake?
Gus Van Sant remade Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho pretty much scene for scene. Call me ignorant but what was the point in that? The original was flawless, why do it again?
The one reason I will see this remake is because of who is playing our sharp fingered fiend... Watchmen's gruff-voiced psychopath, Jackie Earle Haley. Now that is some pretty good casting.

Once more with feeling!
One, two, Freddy's coming for you
Three, four, better lock your door
Five, six, grab your crucifix
Seven, eight, gonna stay up late
Nine, ten, never sleep again
