Tron: Legacy 3D

I was most distressed that no one I knew grew a Tron-stache this Movember - a moustache in the shape of a Recogniser. I would have grown my own if I could... Anyone wanna give it a go next year?
They say 3D but it's more like 2.75D. The 3-ness doesn't kick in till about 25 minutes in and alas, no discounts are available for full 3D ticketed prices : )
But that's OK.
Tron Part Deux - the sequel we didn't know we needed to a movie that is so old, when it was released in 1982, the Commodore 64 was Time's 'Person of the Year'.
Michael Jackon was black.
Tom Selleck was the hottest thing on the telly.
I was six.
Thankfully, via modern technology, I was able to brush up on my Tron-ness recently so I did not have to rely on my childhood memories. It's a good thing I did, there was soooo much I had forgotten.
The Tron: Legacy screenplay was written by two of my favourite writers, Lost alumni Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Star Trek) and directed by first time feature filmer Joseph Kosinski - my he has some very shiny shoes to fill.
We start off in the past and young Kevin Flynn (young Jeff Bridges - Starman) is telling his young son Sam (Owen West - Diary of a Whimpy Kid) about the wonderful world of Tron. That night, he jumps on his motorbike and rides off into the distance and never comes back.
Cue abandonment issues.
Twenty years later young Sam has grown up into late-twenties Sam (Garrett Hedlund - Eragon) and turned into a cross between Slumdog Millionaire and The Social Network.
He doesn't like authority and releases Encom's brand new operating system free to the world moments before it's much anticipated (and highly profitable) release.
One person who isn't pissed at this is Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner - Tron). I miss Babylon 5.
Meanwhile, Sam jumps off a building Batman style and then goes home.
Alan tells Sam he received a page (remember them?) from his dad's old gaming arcade. Curiosity (and plot) dictates he must investigate.
Sam gets sucked into the virtual world of The Grid. Things are shiny and in 3D. Sam meets someone he thinks is his father but is actually a program called CLU which Flynn created back in the day to help him create a better world.
As most movie progenies go, Clu turns bad - think Kim Jong Il bad.
Sam, with the help of super hottie Quorra (Olivia Wilde - House) meets up with his real dad (old Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart) and the three try to figure out a way to get everyone back into the real world. But there's someone missing isn't there... no spoilers!
Tron: Legacy is visually stunning and the lack of that extra dimension in the first quarter of the film just about makes up for that. But when it is in 3D it truly excels. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of those CGI-ers is awesome. Gor-geous. Even the stylised version of the Disney castle was beautiful.
It is very dark, probably to help hide the slight imperfections in recreating a young Bridges (but that's OK). The darkness however did make it very hard in the to watch in the beginning.
Handy hint - take your glasses off for the first part!
Story wise, it kinda lost me. Maybe I shouldn't have seen it after a long day at work and a wee bit tired but I was losing interest in some parts. Maybe they should have taken so long in the beginning to get things started? A tad long perhaps? A bit more action never goes astray.
Must give a flamboyant shout-out to Michael Sheen (The Special Relationship) who played Castor - a program that seemed to be a combination of Alan Cumming and David Bowie mid Ziggy Stardust. Fabulous sweetie!
Definitley one to watch on the big screen and in all (well most of) it's 3D glory.
Things I learnt: always have a parachute; cat videos are cuter than dog videos; Jeff Bridges is the only person who is allowed to say 'Radical' from now on.
VERY pretty.
I defy you not to think that your car is a light cycle when you drive home : )
Seven out of ten.

If you haven't seen thre Tron:Legacy Literal trailer yet... change that now.
Jeff Bridges!

omfg! Theres so much missing from that review. Like how the young jeff bridges was done superbly, i was constantly wondering " how did they do that!" How when the 3D did kick in it was well done, it almost never does for me, but it did in this filum. And how the experience is magnified by watching tron original recipe before enjoy this hot and spicy version. By the way, i want sam's house!

  3. Hey Friend!
I know I missed a bunch - I didn't even mention the score which was extremely good.
I wouldn't quite use the word 'superb'... Young Jeff was done well but there were times when it looked like his head was bobbing around, not connected to his neck. They have come along way with this film, CGI-wise, but it still lacks the extraordinary clarity that Avatar had in regards to replicating people on screen.
