Dreamworks, you've done it again.
Directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders and based on the novel by Cressida Cowell, How To Train Your Dragon brings to life the story of a teenage boy called Hiccup; born into a life of dragon slaying, just like his father and his father before that.
The small town of Berk is located in the far north in Viking country, its inhabitants been slaying dragons for centuries. The dragons menace the village and steal their livestock. The group of Viking warriors, who are built like refrigerators, have a never ending battle on their hands.
Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel from Fanboys), a scrawny kid compared to others in the town, is more of a thinker than a fighter. His father, the aptly named Stoick the Vast (voiced by Gerard Butler), is a massive man with a flowing red beard. Chief Viking of the town and master dragon slayer his only wish is for his son to follow in his footsteps and prove his greatness. But Hiccup has other plans.
One night during a dragon attack, he manages to capture the elusive 'Night Fury' dragon. Injured from the capture, Hiccup forms a bond with the dragon which he names Toothless and the two become good mates. From Toothless Hiccup picks up a trick or two about handling dragons and learns everything the Vikings thought about dragons was wrong.
At dragon slayer school, lead by Gobber (Craig Ferguson) Hiccup astounds his fellow would-be slayers with his new tricks. Slayerette hottie and woman of Hiccup's dreams, Astrid (America Ferrera), figures out something is fishy and investigates.
Together, they work out the dragons and the Vikings have a mutual enemy and the only way they're going to defeat it is to work together.
Only the other day I was wishing for a movie where Butler got to keep his Scottish accent and here it is. He's joined alongside fellow Scots Craig Ferguson, David Tennant and a host other great voices including Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin!) and comedienne Kristen Wiig.
This is such a great movie, I enjoyed every single minute of it. I saw it in 3D, as one should, and marvelled at how far animation flicks have come. I'd go so far as to compare it with Avatar. It even surpasses James Cameron's multi-billion dollar blue-headed monster. Granted, that was amazing to watch but it was let down because of the script. It was so cheesy and cliche it took a little bit of that magic away. HTTYD has a great script and characters you give a damn about, even if they are just pixels!
Kids will love this movie, take them in droves!! It's one of those movies where adults will get just as much out of it as kids will. It's full of witty lines and snappy dialogue, there is something for everyone here. Twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut were hilarious and Fishlegs recites every dragon's strength and weaknesses like he's talking about Pokemon characters.
Things I learnt; if a dragon regurgitates a piece of fish, best you eat it; dragons really are just big fire-breathing puppy dogs; I want more movies with Craig Ferguson!
Ten out of ten!
